It’s Been a While — A Street Gambit Update ♟️

It has been a little while since the last blog post, so I thought it was time for a quick update.

First of all, thank you to everyone who has participated so far, even with the occasional hiccups along the way. Building something new always comes with a few bumps, and the support from you has been incredible.

We now have around 200 signups and close to 100 active players, which is honestly amazing. We’ve even reached a point where some people have played Street Gambit matches without me ever meeting them in person.

That also brings me to a big thank you to all the ambassadors who have helped support meetups around the city. The Street Gambit only works if you show up and make the games happen.

Why I Started The Street Gambit

When I started this project, it was mostly driven by curiosity.

It felt strange to me that casual in-person chess games weren’t easier to find, especially when millions of people are playing online every day. There seemed to be a gap between playing online and committing to formal tournaments.

The Street Gambit is meant to sit somewhere in between:

  • A bridge from online play to over-the-board chess

  • A way to find casual but meaningful games

  • A social activity where people can meet through chess

And just to be clear while I’m standing on my soapbox:
I don’t think this project will cure cancer or create world peace.

But I do believe the world becomes slightly better when people from different backgrounds and ages sit down at a chessboard and play a game together.

What’s Next

Right now the main focus is building the Street Gambit platform.

You can already sign up and test it here:
https://streetgambit.lovable.app

There are definitely still bugs to iron out, so I would really appreciate everyone jumping in, testing it, and sharing feedback—especially the harsh feedback. That’s the only way it improves.

My goal is to run the next round directly through the platform, so this testing phase is important.

Because of that, I’ll delay the next round by one week to week Week 21(May 18 - May 24) to give myself a little more time to test and improve things.

The Next Goal

The ambition is to keep growing.

The next milestone is 1,000 Street Gambit players by the end of June.

Thanks again for being part of this community.

And I hope you have some great games ahead. ♟️
